Homily Repay - February 20, 2022

Luke 6: 27- 38        2-20-2022       (As built, Amite #485)

A. Repay… as in to give back… to repay…

B. It’s the 1950’s his name is Jonathan… and Jonathan is a New York boy there’s no doubt about it… and let me tell you… catholic to the core… to this day… Jonathan is a devout catholic… and he’ll tell you that his mom was the quintessential mom… can do… does do… twice on Sundays… she can do it all… he’ll tell you his dad kind of made ends meet doing number of different things… but golfing per say… and then he’ll tell you he had two brothers… he said they are night and day… they came up with two songs… wild thing… and then the other… angel in the morning… too different personalities… he’ll tell you that man he finished… he went to catholic university… graduated… he said and you know you make your mistakes… but he never forgot what his dad told him… he said whatever you do son no matter how good you are or not…he said you got to give something back… you got to repay… you’ve got to put something in… even if they don’t give it back to you… he said I never forgot that… Jonathan says to this day I still do the same thing… he said you know I got married unfortunately it didn’t work out… we had a child… and he said but man I’m trying to make ends meet… so I’m working odd and end jobs… I get a little bit part in Gun smoke… he said then I get a bit part in NYPD blue… and he says man then the world starts opening up and my dad notices it… and he tells him… you better give something back… you better repay… he said man I get a bit part in the movie Deliverance with Burt Reynolds… and then he said man I started getting in movies… and they just seem to come one after another… right he said man I was in varsity blues… he said I played John Paul the great… he said I even played Paul Bear Bryant in the movie Woodlawn…  I was in the movie Anaconda… I was in the movie enemy with the state… okay were about number ten movies I didn’t memorize a dozen of these things… okay I’ll tell you what he was in the movie national treasure… okay… his daughter is Angelina Jolie… oh are you kidding me… I tell you what next time I’m just giving you that one right…

C. My brothers and sisters in Christ it’s all about giving back… it’s all about repaying… that is that gospel… my brothers and sisters in Christ the good Lord is telling him in so many words… do unto others as you would have them do unto you… how are you going to repay people… if you lend them money they just don’t give it back… you give the a tunic… and they can’t seem to find it… they’re going to hit you on your right cheek… now remember… stop you need to understand this you are Jews… you’re a first century Jew… and for me to hit you on your right cheek… I have to backhand you… this isn’t talking about being physical it’s talking about being verbally abusive… and he says when you do that and you expect nothing in return and you give them the other cheek… that’s where I need to get you… now stop… remember… this is St. Luke… he is a physician by trade… he is not a firsthand witness.. he is not an apostle… as a physician though… the details he’s excellent at… he’s relying on somebody to tell him the exact story… and the one he’s relying on is St. Mark… that’s where he’s going with this… the good Lord has just come down and given the Beatitudes… blessed are the poor in spirit… blessed are those who mourn… those who meek… those who thirst for righteousness… right… and he’s speaking from level ground… and then he talks to them about these woes… if you don’t pay attention… now he’s talking to them about something they have never heard in their life… you’ve got to love your enemy… that’s revolutionary to them…  I mean because he’s telling you… yeah you can love people who love you… I mean don’t tax collectors do the same… now my brothers in Christ… listen to me… and this is where the most mis-quoted scripture comes in the world today… is from this passage right here… you’ve been hearing it for the last two years… who am I to judge… tell me you’ve heard that… excessively… do not judge lest you be judged… you even heard Francis say who am I to judge… my brothers in Christ may I ask you… when you read scripture… can you read the whole paragraph… do not proof text… that’s what they’re doing… they’re pulling that one adage out there… do not judge lest you be judged… who am I to judge… I need you to read the whole paragraph because if you read the whole paragraph… my brothers in Christ you would hear him say… don’t judge anybody by their actions… because then you will condemn them… and if you condemn them… then you can’t forgive them for their actions… he’s not talking about judging them on their character… he’s saying it’s the acts that causes the sin… listen to what I’m telling you… my brothers and sisters in Christ the issue isn’t whether or not you’re gay… the issue isn’t whether or not you’re a power drinker… it’s not the issue that you’re addicted to drugs… or maybe it’s addiction to pornography… my bothers in Christ the issue is the act… that’s where the game is won or lost… he’s saying man when you come to judge… you’re discerning the act… not the person… and he’s saying be careful if you judge them based on their character… because you’ll never be able to forgive them for the act… my brothers and sisters in Christ it is the most mis-quoted scripture we have… and the reason is because we don’t study Christ… if you don’t study Him… you won’t love Him… if you don’t love Him… you won’t come to know Him… but if you love Him you will come to study Him… and if you study Him you will come to know Him… then you’ll love him… and then you’ll study him and pretty soon man the relationship just blossoms… my brothers and sisters in Christ He’s trying to tell them… it’s the act that get in the way… it’s the act of how you’re going to repay Him when you get hurt… when you go my brothers and sisters in Christ… when you go to your office… and as an employer you have to do a review… are you judging on their character or their actions… there is the point…

D. Go back in scripture… all of our best players… all of them… are those that repay… in such a way that you would think… now who in the good Lords name would do that… that’s the point… let me give you an example… my brothers and sisters in Christ… St. Paul is traveling the world… remember he is blind for three days… and as the good Lord cures him… he repays the good Lord by traveling the world for the next three decades… as a tent maker…making dang next to nothing … he’s the only one of the twelve… actually he’s number thirteen if you want to count it that way… he’s not one of the twelve… he’s the only one that has a day job… but what he does to people… is he gives them everlasting life… what if you’re Veronica… you know that in the Jewish days… as a woman you have no say in nothing… matter of fact when they count the number of people at a gathering… five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish… they only count the men… that’s why I tell you there’s ten to twelve thousand people there… my brothers in Christ for Veronica to disrupt the crucifixion… do you understand what she did… oh my God… she’s lucky they just didn’t maul her right there in the middle of the street… the fact of the matter is the good Lord repays her courage… he repays her courage… by putting his fact imprint… into the cloth… that is what the good Lord is willing to do … he’s willing to pack it down… and overflow it… and put it in your lap… because I will repay you tenfold… for the beating that you just took… for the backhanded compliment you just received… my brothers and sisters in Christ can you imagine… you’re Peter… and because his wife agrees… and her name is Porphyria… because she agrees with him to go out and proclaim the gospel… what you and I don’t realize is… is that she got repaid… by also becoming one of the greatest martyrs of our day… because she’s martyred within the same day or week as Peter is… so I tell you these things… because this is what the good Lord is asking you and I… it’s not to repay as the world does… but to repay as he does…

E. Well here we sit two thousand years later… well let’s see… how do you and I repay people… let’s think about it… man you’re driving down the road… somebody cuts you off… gives you… the sign of peace… do you speed back up… make sure you honk and get their attention… to give them the blessing… the blessing my brothers in Christ… my brothers and sisters in Christ… you’re in Walmart and you are thirty people deep and there’s one person checking out… maybe you could use that time to say a prayer… say a rosary… my brothers and sisters in Christ how do you repay people… man when they send you that text message or email that gets you so mad that if you could drive over there right now and strangle them you’d do it…my brothers and sisters in Christ how you repay people when you get that email… or you find out somebody gossiped about you… ask yourself… is your name safe on your lips… well then why isn’t your neighbors name not as safe on our lips… that’s the point Christ is saying… will you turn the other cheek when somebody goes up one side and down the other… will you turn the other cheek when somebody’s says man you know what I think… or when you hear somebody gossip and say you know what I heard… you know what they say… I’m just saying… are you willing to stand up and say you know what I tell you what… let’s pray for them… my brothers and sisters in Christ if you and I don’t learn to show Christ in our actions… how will anybody in this world come to know that he exists… I mean are we only catholic inside the doors… we’ve done such a great job of keeping our religion private… we don’t know how to go public… my brothers and sisters in Christ are you willing to stick to your guns… when they say make the sign of the cross  you make it clearly and distinctly… so that the good Lord will repay you for the hits that you are about to take… do you have the courage when they say let us pray… you break out the hail Mary… regardless of what anybody else thinks… because the good Lord and his mother will repay you tenfold for what you did in public… if you do not acknowledge me before my Father in public… I will not acknowledge you… my brothers and sisters in Christ I’m telling you… it’s the way we have to think… that you’ve got to learn that it’s a discipline… that you may not expect payment back from your brothers… or your sisters … or your family… that you’ll never get payed back for all the phone calls you have been getting… to solve their problems… you may never get back all the time you spent on the phone… going in a circle… over… and over… and over again… well Simon… that’s why you get the grace… because you’ve been asked to carry the cross… and the more you complain about it the less grace you get… so what I’m asking you to do is to be more Christ like… I’m telling you my brothers and sisters in Christ if you and I don’t change how we walk… then we surely can’t expect anybody else to follow…

F. And I leave you in the words… and I can’t even remember his name … he said if you truly want to be a good catholic… you can only show it… when you go out to help somebody… who never plans to repay you… my brothers in Christ I’m telling you… expect nothing… but for his reward in heaven… that… is our payment…

G. Amen…
