Homily Rejection - January 30, 2022

Luke 4: 21-30          1/ 30/2022      (As built in, Amite #482)

A. Rejection… summarily rejected… what you had to say… what you had to do… what you did… how you acted… summarily rejected… no good deed… goes undone…

B. Man the year is about 1950 or so… and he is about yay tall… he has a very round face… he is very… he is very english… he has the little knickers on… he’s got the little white shirt… he’s got the tie… it’s collared all the way up… he’s got the white socks… froths shoes all the way up to his knees… so there about like this much of a gap… his shoes are polished… and he’s extremely intellectual… and I mean in England he would have been the bees knees… but you’re in America… you’re summarily rejected… I mean you don’t dress right… you don’t talk right… you’re not good in athletics… you’re very intellectual… and plus you look like a little cherub… you could stand him up no matter how you rolled him… as a result of it man he’s… you know he just wants to fit in… so his dad decides look Al what we’re going to do is I need you to go talk to the sheriff… bring this note… talk to him and I need you to come back… his dad is worried… that he’s just not going to harden up fast enough… quick enough in the United States…so he gives him a note… he writes on the note … give this to the sheriff… so when the sheriff gets the note he says look I need to kind of toughen my son up… I don’t know how to go about it so could you maybe show him the jail… the cells… the prison yard whatever… so he shows him and he puts him in isolation… and he shuts the door… ten minutes… this little boy’s world is upside down… you want to talk about the poster child for rejection… he don’t know what to do… ten minutes later he is crying… he is wailing… and let me tell you… if you took all the phobias of the world… for example claustrophobic you know the fear of closed in areas… if you had like height anxiety right in other words the fear of heights man you had that… you had harpaxophobia … which is the fear of being robbed… now because he was in prison… he has agoraphobia which is the fear of crowds… he’s got xenophobia which is the fear of being near strangers… he’s got them all… as a result of it he’s not only rejected what he thought by his dad… he’s rejected by anybody and everybody… so man he’s got to work… so man he works at a T.V. station… Al works over here… he does this… he runs errands… so he finally decides man the only way i’ll make it… is i’m going to sell all my phobias… to writers… and I got to tell you… it takes off… the guy who is summarily rejected is finally accepted… in his own way… and now he is eclectic… you know and I got to tell you… they took all… some of his movies like one was called “Rebecca”… one was called

“ the read view window”… swing and a miss okay alright… then he was in another one “to catch a thief”… “dial in for murder”… uh oh… okay you know it’s not like I got a whole bunch of these in my pocket okay… “psycho”… “ the birds”… okay it’s Alfred Hitchcock my bothers and sisters in Christ… okay… I remember watching a show with my father… and I don’t know which one it was and in every show… he’s in the show somewhere you’ve got to look for him right… he’s like one time he’s in a wheelchair and then as you see the wheelchair go in the back about a few seconds later he gets up and walks out the chair… I remember telling my dad that guy got up and walked…and I remember my dad looking at me thinking… oh my God… ten years of catholic education… and my boy thinks the guy walked… I remember he looked at me like honey he’s lost cut him loose… right… summarily rejected…

C. That is the gospel… my brothers and sisters in Christ… He is doing His first homily in his hometown of Nazareth… and what are the words he hears… wait a minute…wait a minute you just pulled Isaiah … you said you were God… aren’t you the son of Joseph… and you can’t be a prophet in your own hometown… now remember this… I want you to please remember this… you have to study Christ as a Jew… His mom is a Jew… His stepfather if you will is a Jew… their parents are Jews… they go to the synagogue… He’s circumcised as a Jew… He’s crucified as a Jew… He’s caught in a synagogue at the age 12… He’s a Jew… so this is what’s going on… He’s back in his hometown of Nazareth… the synagogue is not much bigger then our little church here… as a result of it he gives His first homily it’s five words… about ten words… they give Him the scroll of Isaiah… He doesn’t ask for it… he reads… that this is the day of which the good Lord has made it known that he has now come… in so many words… and then He sits down… He sits down… that’s all he said… why would you be so upset… that you wan to throw him headlong off the edge of a cliff… it couldn’t be because your the son of Joseph… it can’t be because your not a prophet in your hometown… you know the words physician cure yourself… you know who the author of this is… Luke the physician… so in other words he’s saying oh i’ve heard it all too well… you know you hear it today… the car mechanic always drives the car that doesn’t run well.. that’s where Luke’s going with it… I know all too well… remember Luke is not an apostle… and he is not a first hand witness… but he is going directly to first hand witnesses… which would probably been Mark or Matthew… probably Mark more then Matthew… I digress… the point being is… he’s saying Christ has now given his first homily… what makes them so mad… is when Christ says you know right after you told me you’re not a prophet in your hometown… cure yourself physician… he said in so many words… you know we sent a prophet into the world… Eli’jah… and in all of Israel… y’all think he’s great… and he was… relative… of all of Israel… he wouldn’t allow for almost three and a half years for anything to happen… until you learn to bend your knee… he went to one person… he went to the widow of Zar’ephath to be fed… out of all of Israel… they couldn’t even find one holy person… then he says then Eli’sha comes… and the only one he cures is Na’amen the Syrian… so therefore… if you did not see it in him you will never see it in me… now they’re mad… because you’re saying that there’s no good people in the synagogue… this is why they want to throw him headlong off the edge of a cliff… and when He leaves them without being noticed… they’ll understand this… remember when the good Lord is on the cross… he’s dead… he is dead… and they stab him and he bleeds…that’s his divine essence… this is why on Easter Sunday night when the apostles are in a locked room… He can walk through the door… but they can still touch Him… He can still eat the food… my brothers and sisters in Christ that’s the divine essence… this is why I say… the body of Christ… his divine name… and not body of Jesus his given name… so the reason he can pass between them is he’s doing it because he’s telling you… I am God… they still didn’t get it… so that you know the rest of the story… he was summarily rejected in his own hometown…

D.  my brothers in Christ all of our best players in scripture are summarily rejected… not just by the people… by their own faith… and by their own church… and here’s a prime example… Joseph of Arimathea has a tomb… as a result of it he gives up his tomb… now remember that’s no small undertaking… here’s the problem… Jospeh of Arimathea has clout… has money and means… because you normally don’t have your own tomb… as a result of giving up his tomb to Christ… everybody knows where he sits now… he’s very Jewish… as a result of it… within about thirty to sixty days after burying Christ… he has to leave… there is no more gardens… there is no more money and fame and fortune… according to tradition he goes to England… and this is where he starts actually an Abby… he will eventually pass there… to this day on Christmas day where he actually put his staff down to start the Abby… they say there’s a bush there that flowers and buds… all in one day… and then actually collapses at the end of Christmas day… all in twenty four hours… now there’s a partner of his called Nicodemus… Nicodemus is a Sanhedrin… Nicodemus is a pharisee… Nicodemus was very prestigious… within about forty days he has been thrown out of Jerusalem… we believe ultimately he will be martyred… summarily rejected… Paul goes from Saul to Paul and we behead him… everyone of the apostles were devout Jews… in a devout follower of Christ… and everyone of them was summarily rejected… yeah you know Peter was crucified upside down that’s true… but do you know about the rest of the boys… for example… what about Andrew… the one that’s crucified on the cross… he’s on the X… the reason you know why they use the X… it’s because dogs have to eat too… you see it’s lower to the ground… do you know Andrew was curing people on the cross for the three days he was up there… summarily rejected… curing people on the cross… and they still decide to crucify him… my brothers in Christ if you went to see James the Lesser… he’s the one that would pray so much they said his knees were like camel skin… you would ask him to pray… he’d drop in the middle of the road and pray… when he would not deny our savior… they brought him up to the pinnacle in Jerusalem in the temple… you can see it today… when he wouldn’t deny Him they pushed him off… he falls over two hundred feet… and when he hits the ground and he’s not dead they beat him to death with a club… all he did was pray… John… everybody thinks John didn’t get martyred… for the most part that is true… but we also know that they did try to boil him in oil… and then he’s regulated to the island of Patmos… he lives some fifty years past all the other apostles… man that’s a martyrdom of being alone… that’s like dead by a thousand pin pricks… my brothers and sisters in Chris James is beheaded in the year forty-four the first one out the shop… you know you and I make fun of Thomas… you know because he didn’t believe right… but nobody talks about Thomas being speared to death… no one talks about the fact that of all the apostles… Thomas is the one that everybody wanted to travel with… he just had that happy go-lucky disposition… nobody talks about Simon who was sawed in half…we believe him to be a man of color… he was a leper… he was rejected by his own family… he’s rejected by the community because he’s a leper… my brothers in Christ he’s sawed in half because he goes into a temple… and he gets rid of all the demons and when the king comes back who worshipped demons… sawed him in half… and then when he got to Thaddeus… who’s name was also Judas… can you imagine trying to pitch a gospel under the name of Judas… hence why your called Thaddeus… you know he’s a guy’s guy… he’s speared to death… as a matter of fact we actually believe that that was Josephs brother’s son… my brothers in Christ you know Matthias was beheaded… do we also know that Philip who was married was crucified upside down as well… that Bartholomew who we also believe was married do you know he was skinned alive… Matthew was beheaded because he had the choice and he had a Roman citizenship… Everybody who followed Christ was summarily rejected…

E.  Well now here you and I sit two thousand years later… let me ask you… how many times have you gone somewhere and been summarily rejected… your opinion was not heard… it was scoffed or laughed at… you’ve gone to work and you’ve been totally dismissed… I don’t need you… I don’t need you… I don’t like you answer… don’t care for your opinion… can’t get work… don’t get the job… how many times are you going somewhere in school and somehow or another you’re summarily rejected by our peers… how many times you’ve gone somewhere my brothers in Christ and as soon as you ddi this… you were persona non grata … man they said let us pray… and you broke out in the sign of the cross… and man everybody gave you the look… remember what they tell you in John and Lukes gospel… they hated me… they’re going to hate you… they rejected me… they are going to reject you… my brothers and sisters in Christ remember what Matthew says…they may reject you but you better persevere to the very end… if you wish to be saved… please never forget this… when somebody asks you… are you saved… I was… the crucifixion… I am… right now you and I are talking about him in his church… if we are to pass away may the last words off our lips to his ears be in his church… and I hope to be… because you and I have free will… and there’s no way to walk away from that… you have to persevere to the end… the commandments are not sticky notes… they are not guidelines… they are not suggestions… they are commands… he wrote them on stone twice… so that you and I would know exactly what they mean… so therefore do not sell me the garbage… that once saved always saved because now… then what’s the problem… I mean father I haven’t killed anybody… well that’s one out of ten… you ain’t even a good ballplayer… my brothers and sisters in Christ that’s why there are ten commandments… you know the rich man stepping over Lazarus… and didn’t help him… didn’t feed him… didn’t care for him… love of neighbor… he got to hell too… he didn’t kill anybody … my brothers and sisters in Christ when you are summarily rejected… because of who you are… because you are a follower of Holy Mother church… there are forty thousand faiths in the world today… and I’m telling you… you got to stop apologizing for being Catholic… it’s got to stop… you’ve got to make that distinction clearly… so that everybody knows where you stand in the world… we have taken our faith so private… we don’t know how to go public… the fact of the matter is when people say let us pray… you better break out that Father Son and Holy spirit… if they say let us pray do you have the gumption and the nerve and the courage… to break out the Hail Mary… do you understand the Creed and you’re able to recite it so they know where you sit… enough is enough is enough…remember what Mark Twain said… if there was a fence between heaven and hell… it’d be owned by the devil himself…

F. I leave you with this… what other people think of you… is none of your business…

G. Amen…
