Wearing Lipstick in a Catholic School - October 22, 2023

lipstick on mirror 1
According to a news report, a certain private Catholic school was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine provided it was of a natural or neutral skin tone, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them; and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally, the principal, Sister Mary, decided that something had to be done.

She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian, who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses).

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, Sister Mary asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachers...... And then there are educators!

Don’t mess with nuns... they are wicked smart!!

Homily Destination - January 8, 2023

Matthew 2:1-12         1-8-2023         (As built, Amite #528)

  1. Destination… A final destination like in the words of the Good Lord to Peter… Peter where are you going… what is your destination…
  2. You know I got to tell you… I like Wade… I like his understanding… I like the fact that Wade can take a hit… I like the fact that Wade knows his destination… and even though don’t get me wrong… he gets dinged along the way… he never forgets what he wants… you see it all begins in Virginia for him… and it begins with a physician who started a pharmacy… you see Wade wants to be a pharmacist… and as a result of such he latches on and becomes good friends with a doctor who’s very strict… pretty disciplined… pretty much what you see is what you get… but he gives Wade the start… and as a result of it man he’s learning the business… he’s understanding… he’s become a pharmacist… but along the way he falls… I got to tell you he kind of falls smitten… head over heels if you will in love with the doctors daughter… and as a result of it man Wade really wants to meet her… so depending on whether she goes to church… he kind of shows up there… he knows kind of where she lives and one day she comes in to the visit the pharmacy and I got to tell you man it just takes off from there… man he is smitten… so he’s worked on this concoction if you will as a pharmacist… to show man just in some way to flatter her… and as a result man you can see they’re hitting it off… well the doctor will have none of it… and as a result of it he pulls Wade to the side and tells him… Wade look my daughter is too young to make this decision… if she wasn’t then the decision would not be you… Wade says huh… he goes I really would like her to marry a physician… someone of means… somebody that can take care of her… Wade takes the hit… that’s why I like him… the boy can take a hit and keep moving… so he leaves and he goes to Waco Texas… he never sees her again… he does eventually get married… but in order to honor the doctor if you will… because he still cared for him because he still gave him the job and still got him started… so man his business kind of just flourished… and so he decided to take the concoction that he was going to give to his daughter and just said well I’m going to go ahead and get it started… it became so popular that it’s still popular today… that many of you and I partake of it… as a matter of fact it’s one of the most popular soft drinks today… and they named it after the doctor… Pepper… oh thank you Lord… somebody yelled out last night Dr. Scholes I said really… wow… man talk about ruining the whole story no matter how you count it…
  3. My brothers and sisters in Christ it’s all about the destination… that is exactly the point of the Gospel… three men have traveled at least we believe five to six months… maybe a year… to get to meet the Christ child… my brothers and sisters in Christ since you are first century Jews and you know Jewish scripture man I introduce you to the three… my brothers and sisters in Christ just so you know the Elder Statesman on the end his name is Melchior… Melchior will pass shortly after meeting the Messiah… he’s like Simeon and the high priest who circumcised Christ… he just wanted to lay eyes on the newborn king… now remember it takes them almost a year to get there… this is why Herod is killing everybody two years and younger… he’s trying to make sure that somehow or another in this massive net that he’s going out there and he’s going to catch the Christ child… he’s if you will Melchior… brings the myrrh it’s a burial ointment… my brothers and sisters in Christ… man how does that go over at a birthday party… the next gentleman that you see here that’s got kind of like a little bit of an orange cap… his name is Balthazar… he brings the incense… you want to blame somebody for the smoke… that’s your boy right there… all that coughing… that’s his problem right there… my brothers in Christ and last but not least is Caspar who brings the gold… my brothers and sisters in Christ remember now they come from several different countries… they all speak different languages… they meet along the way… they show up at a house not a grotto… we also believe according to the saints that is the first blessing that the Christ child does in the sign of the cross… they all knelt and laid prostrate before him… and with the help of the blessed mother the child who is two years old he’s still God makes the first sign of the Cross according to traditions… more importantly my brothers in Christ remember this… there’s always a miracle behind the miracle… how does… I’ll be honest with you… how does Joseph afford to move his family to Egypt… he’s got no burrow… he’s got no money… it’s the gold… my brothers and sisters in Christ the good Lord is always taking care of the little intangibles… now this is what you need to understand… they traveled all the way following a star to meet Herod… you need to understand who Herod is in the world… Herod was put in place… by Caesar… Caesar puts him in place as kind of a puppet and as a  result he takes the title… grab this… king of the Jews… he’s not even Jewish he’s an  Edomite…so when three guys show up saying where’s the king of the Jews you can understand why he gets a little incensed… this is the type of person Herod is… Herod has killed his favorite wife…that’s right his favorite one… he’s killed several of his children… he has several known diseases… some that aren’t even known back in their day… as a matter of fact my brothers and sisters in Christ he is off the charts… even Caesar says this of Herod… it would be better for you to be Herod’s pig… he’s supposed to be Jewish… then it would be to be a family member of a family member of Herod… these three guys know exactly who their going to meet so it’s important to them that they get in… see him and get out… this is why the star is not seen by Jerusalem or by Herod and they don’t pick it up until after they leave… my brothers in Christ they left their families because the ultimate destination was to see the Christ child… they don’t know if they’re going to have a home when they get back… they don’t know if they’re going to get through Herod… they don’t even know if they’re going to see him… they pack up their families and everything they own and they go to see him because the destination is the journey… it is the goal…
  4. My brothers and sisters in Christ go back in scripture… our best players are people that never lose sight of the destination… you know what John the Baptist taught you and I… clothes don’t make the man.. doesn’t matter… only thing that matters is that I baptize the Christ child… You know what Mary Magdalene taught you and I … that no matter how bad your past is… no matter how bad it is… it’s only where you go from this day forward…every saint has a past and every sinner has a future… my brothers and sisters in Christ you know what Veronica taught you and I… that’s the one with the veil.. that no matter how small your gift is… it’s given with great intention with great love… it’s the most powerful thing in the world… two thousand years later we still have the veil at the Vatican… my brothers and sisters in Christ… you know what Saint Paul taught you and I… that no matter how many times you get knocked down… and it’s going to happen… the only answer is… will you stand up… will you finish what has started to arrive at the destination…
  5. My brothers and sisters in Christ here you and I sit two thousand years later… you and I need to focus on what’s our destination… we got one job… one… and that is to get to heaven… our name has to be in that book of life… your name… my name… your families name… that’s the destination… anything before that is totally irrelevant… my brothers and sisters in Christ think for a second… how many times yesterday… this week… this past month… something has happened in your life… some situation… totally Jettisoned you… off the the trajectory of where your destination was to go… man you got that email and you got so wrapped up in it… man you couldn’t wait to respond back to it… as if somehow or another your response to that email was significant… my brothers and sisters in Christ how many times do I hear y’all tell me I don’t care what other people think… that’s right… you shouldn’t… my brothers and sisters in Christ remember this… what other people thing of you is none of your business… my brothers and sisters in Christ did not Mother Teresa tell you and I this… people are unreasonable, illogical and self centered… forgive them anyway… if you are honest they will cheat you… you be honest anyway… if you are successful you will win false friends and true enemies… you succeed anyway… if you are happy people will be jealous… you be happy anyway… you build something over a lifetime and they destroy it overnight you build it anyway… because it was never between you and them it was between you and Him anyway… my brothers and sisters in Christ don’t you understand what I’m trying to tell you… do not allow people to get in the way between you and making the gates… you got to get to Heaven… anything else is totally irrelevant… you’re only going to spend ninety to one hundred years on this planet… and then what… my brothers and sisters in Christ I’m telling you… don’t get distracted… don’t allow the decimal point to dictate what you do or don’t do… Judas has already proven what happens when you tie your name to a decimal point… do not tie your name to a job description… you do what you do because you’re a follower of Jesus Christ … you do what you do because you’re a good Catholic man and woman… you do what you do because you’re a Catholic doctor… Catholic engineer… you’re a  Catholic teacher… you’re a Catholic… that’s why you do what you do… you’re a follower of Jesus Christ… do not get distracted my brothers and sisters in Christ on your destination… don’t allow an email or text message… an understanding… a job… an argument… do you not understand… every decision you make… every decision you make no matter how trivial… speed up… slow down… go left… go right… are you walking towards him or are you walking away from him… you are never neutral to him… when you miss a mass… you jettison yourself from your destination… because you didn’t have time for it… how many times do I hear people say… father man I went to Disney world… in-laws outlaws… kids… I’m so exhausted I need a vacation from my vacation… man father I just missed mass… you found Cinderella’s castle… well absolutely father… you should have found the church not my fault… go to confession… my brothers and sisters in Christ that’s the point… what is your rule of life… no matter what you’re doing in this world… at work… at home…

Gracious and all-loving Father, out of love for all people you spoke your Word who became flesh for our salvation. May your Word transform me so that the message of your Son, our Lord, may be echoed through my teaching. Allow me to guide the hearts of those whom I teach in such a way that they will enter more deeply into your way of truth and salvation. Grant me the insight needed to lead them to know, love, and serve you. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, may they become hearers and followers of your Word, so that they might help transform the world to follow the way of life to which your Son has called us all, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
