Luke 3:1-6; 12-9-2018 (As Built; Amite #331)

  1. Describe… Describe… As in describe yourself in 10 words or less… Describe…
  2. His name is Wally… Wally lives in Kansas City, Missouri… Imagine Wally is sitting out on the front of this Antebellum home… This home is stunning… I’m talking it’s one of these antebellum homes with these massive columns… the porch that wraps all the way around … it’s 10-15 foot deep… It’s unbelievable… And there is Wally… Man he’s living the life… He’s got all his toys I mean he’s got the trucks he’s got the little wind up cars that go away… he’s got the tractors… Wally’s got trains… Wally loves trains… And I mean he’s having the time of his life… And then he starts thinking back… He’s got a problem… One… He’s mad at his dad… You see his dad left their former town as a train mechanic… Which he loved being a part of… And he’s moved to Kansas City, Missouri… And so he’s mad because they’ve left that… working on trains… he loved trains… And then also… well Wally has a second problem… Those are his toys… It ain’t his porch… It ain’t his house… He’s just having a good old time… And his dad told him Wally there’s three rules in delivering papers son… I gotta do this because I can make more money this way to support the family… Almost $6000 more a year… We need to do this… First of all I’m going to pay all my delivery boys three dollars a day… Less you… Because were putting clothes on your back and a roof over of your head and I am educating you… that’s your contribution… Number two… When it’s raining take the paper open the screen door and put it inside… Number three… when it’s windy take a brick and put it on top… So it doesn’t just blow away… And last but not lease do not throw the papers… Son you can’t throw it all… just don’t throw… Just drop it off… So Wally gets a little mad… Hence he’s on the porch playing with someone else’s toys… And as a result of it the day goes by… Wally goes back home papers have been for the most part delivered… And as a result of it his dad is a little beside himself… Man Wally what’s going on… Dad I got caught up… I saw this porch… They are trains dad… they had trains… And he said son… You know someday you’re gonna understand… He said… dad you need to understand something about trains… Someday dad you watch… Someday whenever you come to describe me to other people you gonna use the word trains… He said I’m just telling you dad… Look think about what trains give us… They give us all the great sayings in the world… Blow your stack because the fumes go out the top… You’re born on the wrong side of the tracks… That means the fumes and the soot would fall to the poor side… He said man the wheels can’t get a grip like they kind a screeching… He said because the wheels of the train can’t catch up… Or yank my chain… Because you and I both know that when the train takes off it doesn’t have that synergy and it just kinda hobbles along… He said son… deliver the papers… As a result of it… He delivers the papers… At the age of 16 he said I had enough he goes to the army Wally does… He is an ambulance driver… And he does pretty good with it until well Wally I had more accidents then he delivered people… So they decided man we can’t even let them do this… They said man what if you just write for the army paper… You know you got a good sense of humor… You got a good write… Maybe you could just do cartoons… He starts writing an calls it Oswald the rabbit… Exactly right… It flops… Then he does another one… Called Flop the frog… Every bit as popular as the first one Oswald the rabbit… And then brothers and sisters in Christ… he starts hitting his rhythm … You see he starts writing about one called Steamboat Willy… Ah… Yeah my brothers and sisters in Christ… And then all of a sudden he writes about a train about this mouse and his wife says man you need to call him Mickey… Yeah you know Wally as Walt Disney… Man how can you describe him without describing Disney World… Mickey Mouse… Or trains…
  3. That in a roundabout way is the gospel my brothers and sisters in Christ… It was hard to fit that in I’m just being honest… My brothers and sisters in Christ… Think about how John the Baptist is described for you and I… If you or I were to say… locust… wild honey… wear camel skin… you and I immediately know John the Baptist… It’s amazing brothers and sisters in Christ if you listen how the good Lord describes John the Baptist… Of all the men born of women… Of all the men born of women… None is greater than John the Baptist… That… That… Is a highly praised description… You know what it is amazing… Did you listen to how John the Baptist described our Savior… He will take mountains and level them… He will take valleys and fill them… He will take winding road roads in make them straight… And if their bumpy he’ll make them smooth… Now brothers and sisters in Christ… You and I are 1st Century Jews… And we’re hearing this conversation… Brothers and sisters in Christ… You got to remember to put yourself back in the life of a 1st Century Jew… When Christ is talking about John the Baptist you and I need to understand… It was a Baptism of repentance… To have a repentant heart… That is what that baptism was… Make sure you understand this… Brothers sisters in Christ… The only person that recognize Christ for who He was and is… Is John the Baptist… Before the clouds opened up an a dove descends and God the Father says this is My Son Whom I’m well pleased… John the Baptist recognizes Him… The only way John the Baptist recognizes Him is because he met Him and his mother’s womb when he began to dance when the Blessed Mother entered the room and the baby began to dance in Elizabeth’s womb… My brothers and sisters in Christ as a 1st Century Jew… You and I would’ve known these things… We would’ve also known that during the exodus when Moses leads people out over the Red Sea… the soldiers are destroyed and they’re in the desert… Remember Moses doesn’t go to the promised land… He has someone else take over and his name is Joshua… Which is Greek for ‘a foretelling of Jesus’… And where do they cross… Exactly in the same spot where Jesus is baptized… Manna did no longer fall in the desert… Once they cross into the promised land… and now all of a sudden manna falls every hour of every day in every country in every language… He is the bread of life… Born in the city of Bethlehem… the city of bread… Brothers and sisters in Christ… Did you know… That the lowest point on all the earth is right there where He was baptized in the river Jordan… So He went from the highest of high… to the lowest of the low… to make it for you and I… so we can obtain heaven…
  4. My brother sisters in Christ… You can describe anybody you want scripture… Go back in scripture… I bet you if I just use a few sentences you’ll say I know who that is… If I told you that he was crucified upside down… You’d say man that’s Peter… If I told you… That he said truly that man’s the Son of the living God… You’d say man that’s Longinaus… the one that stabbed Him… My brothers and sisters in Christ if I told you she took her only veil and wiped the face of Christ… You say man that’s Veronica… Brothers and sisters in Christ… 2000 years later if I told you he is one of the apostles who doubted… You’d say Thomas… But yet nobody describes him as the one that was speared to death… My brothers and sisters in Christ… Therein lies the point… How will you and I be described… What will be written on our tombstone… how would we describe one another… More importantly how will the Good Lord describe you and I when we stand before Him… And we will… My brothers and sisters in Christ… If I were to ask your spouse to describe you… (Ok… skip that whole conversation… I got to just omit that for the next homily… Just skip that one…) If you had to describe yourself… Or somebody described you into ten words or less… Would they say that you were prideful… You wouldn’t admit you’re wrong or say you’re sorry… You were so angry that man you just try to convince everyone that you were born that way… He made all things good… We made ourselves angry… Would they describe us as gluttonous are lustful… chasing money… slothful… or envious… Would they say man… that guy cursed they thought you were a sailor in your prior life… Man did they think man you’re not only a morning person… You ain’t even an afternoon person… Sometimes I even wonder if you are human… I’m brothers and sisters in Christ… how people describe you… would they describe you with words that would resonate in our Saviors ears… Would they say now that is a disciple of Jesus Christ… That person is so prayerful… Man they’re so devout… there so dedicated… They’re Catholic… But they say man he or she is a Marian… Would they say man she’s a great or he’s a great listener… That he has a good knowledge… That he has wisdom… Did they have understanding… Brothers and sisters in Christ… how are they going to describe you and I… Because that’s basically what’s gonna happen when you and I finally pass away… Remember the story my brothers and sisters in Christ… Go back to when the lady was being stoned… When the good Lord gets down on His knees and begins to write the description of the sins of everybody that’s throwing a rock… So that when He looked at you and He started to draw the sin in the ground He is describing your sin… And then when they begin the listen He stands… And then they start picking the rocks back up again… And then all of a sudden He has to get back down on His knees to finish putting everyone’s description of sins back on the ground…
  5. So it begs the question for you and I… On the day of our judgment… Will He say welcome home my son my daughter… JOB WELL DONE… Or will He dropped to His knees… and begin to write the descriptions of all the sins that you refused to go to confession over… That you somehow or another bought into the argument that you could go directly to Him… And He never said that… He never heard a confession… He never baptized anybody… My brothers and sisters in Christ… Ask yourself… What do you want written on that tombstone… How do you want to be described…
  6. And I leave you with this… You may not know this but maybe you do… I enjoy walking through cemeteries… It’s very peaceful… Nobody looks for me there… It’s a wonderful world… And as a result of it… I walk through and say prayers for the souls that are there for the ones that are coming… I pray for each and everyone of your families… Also pray for my family… Every once in a while you read a tombstone in 10 words or less that just… I got to tell ya… some of the things that we come up with… A buddy of mine and I were talking… he likes to do the same thing… I know father Howard likes to enjoy the walk as well… But every once in a while you’ll read a tombstone that was sent to me… And on the tombstone this is all it had… I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK… I got to tell ya that’s pretty good… OK… It gave me a good chuckle for the day… I got to tell ya… And I got to tell you there was that tombstone… A buddy that of mine sent it to me… he’s in an area where he would see these… It’s a tombstone I can’t think of the guys name… but he wrote all the cartoons… That’s all folks… That’s on his tombstone… THAT’S ALL FOLKS
  7. Amen…
