Matthew 25; 31-46 (As Built; #282; 11-26-17)

“Do Something”
… It’s the 1940’s…. and his name is Johnathon… he lives in Yonkers, NY… his mom, well, she can flat do it all… and twice on Sunday… dad, well he is a professional golfer… which for the most part, is what the family lives on… he has two brothers… one who became a singer…. He wrote the songs, Wild Thing…(you make my heart sing….) and he wrote, Angel in the Morning…but Johnathon, music was not so much his thing… in HS, he attended an Archbishop HS, all boys Catholic School…. And later graduated from Catholic University…. After graduating college, Johnathon, decided that he needed to DO SOMETHING…. So he decided wanted to act… and it wasn’t long thereafter, that he got married… though the marriage didn’t last too long, he has a very famous daughter… she acts today! With this being said, he tried his hand at a few series… NYPD Blue, Gunsmoke, Naked City… and a movie called View from a Bridge… but it wasn’t until he did, Midnight Cowboy, that Johnathon got his due… for that lead to Deliverance … with Burt Reynolds… Johnathon was in the movie, Runaway Train… then Enemy of the State, John Paul II, Noah, Varsity Blues, Glory Road, Woodlawn as Paul Bear Bryant…. He played Howard Cosell in the movie Ali, and he was in National Treasure… even on Seinfeld… yes you know Johnathon, as Johnathon John Voight!! And it wasn’t long ago…John Voight was in line in Walmart… a lady in front of him was buying 6 turkeys for thanksgiving… when the cashier asked her why so many… the lady informed her she is buying for the House of Innocents… and when John Voight heard this… he knew he had to DO SOMETHING… so he bought the turkeys and became involved in the House of Innocents… John Voight is who he is… because he decided to …. DO SOMETHING!!!
THE GOSPEL TODAY IS all ABOUT… DOING SOMETHING…!! Twice in the Gospel… the Good Lord makes the point…. Its not just about what you do…. Its also about… WHAT YOU DON’T DO!!
If you are a first century Jew… whenever a prophet or Scripture speaks of a Shepherd, sheep … goats, etc… they are always refereeing to the final judgement… so For Christ to speak of the issue of sheep’s and goats… He is referring to HIS final judgement… and to make sure you are still with me… the Good Lord makes the point… that it is NOT FAITH ALONE… its FAITH AND WORKS… and in particular… what works you didn’t do… the sin of omission… because you have FAITH you will do good works… because you do good works, people will see you have FAITH… but remember, its also about what you DON’T DO!!!
My friends in Christ… THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE… there are numerous players, big time players in Scripture… that whose names are in the book of life… because of what they did… hence, they did SOMETHING… Would we even know who Joseph of Arimathea is…had he not given up his tomb….? Would we even know who Simon of Cyrene is …had he NOT helped carry the cross… would we even know who Veronica is, had she not give up her vail to wipe the face of Christ… What would have happened, had Peter said… enough is enough… I had to put my family on the back burner… leave my profession… go without pay… not to mention, inherit a whole new set of problems…. I will Not do anything more… would we even know of mother church? What if Paul refused to speak to the Gentiles…or travel the world… Paul is tired, beat up…. Scourged… in prison…Paul decides to DO NOTHING… would we have any gentiles for Church?
The question, albeit 2000 years later… is whether you and I will do so… well, lets see…. Will you and I DO SOMETHING?!?! ….WHEN it comes to work… will you DO SOMETHING to show you are Catholic… lead a prayer, make the Sign of the Cross… pray the Hail Mary when you know no one is going to do it…. Will you DO SOMETHING to show you neighbors that you a Catholic… by placing something in your yard…or in your house!! We need TO STOP APLOGIZING… for being Catholic!!! For some 1400 year you are either Catholic or Jewish…maybe pagan… if it wasn’t for Martin Luther… there would be nothing else to be… SO DO SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU ARE CATHOLIC… !!!
My B & S… we are coming up on Advent… and I know when I say the words Lent, many people begin to cringe… thinking... ‘oh my gawd… I have to give up something… and they begin to hymn and haw’…how many times do I hear people talk about… I cant give up nothing fa-der… it gives me headaches!!!! … Really?!?!?! Oh, I would hate for that to happen to you… I mean a headache as compared to carrying a 12ft tall cross, 8 ft wide…I shudder to think you will have a headache!!!!!... or how many times I hear people say, fa-der… I can’t give up anything, it makes me cranky!!! Let me help ya… you are cranky ANYWAY!!! Or… fa-der… if I give up something I may begin to complain too much… heck, you complain too much already …. What’s another few weeks!!!!
Soooo lets …. DO SOMETHING … well we are about to embark on Advent… and when Christ comes on that day, Christmas day… what will you and I give HIM… our sins…our pride, anger, gluttony, slough, avarice…lust or envy… or are you willing to DO SOMETHING…anything… another words, are you willing to give up SOMETHING, like in lent… so that when HE does come on Christmas day… we can give HIM our sacrifice… ITS ONLY 30 DAYS….
My Friends in Christ… I leave you with this… Benjamin Franklin was right… there are two types of people... for the most part… ‘Either, there are those who will write something worth reading… those who will…. DO SOMETHING worth writing about!!!!
So please this advent… DO SOMETHING
Amen!
